Little Italy Neighborhood Association Community Mural
The Wilmington Mural Arts Collaborative will undertake its fifth community mural project in partnership with M. Fierro & Sons and the Little Italy Neighborhood Association (LINA) starting in the fall of 2008. The organizing, planning, designing, and fund raising have already started with the actual painting to be done in the spring of 2009. The Wilmington Mural Arts Collaborative (WMAC) is a cooperative network of local organizations formed in December of 2001 around the common goal of promoting public art, and murals in particular, in the City of Wilmington. At present, the Collaborative consists of the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Howard High School of Technology, and the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs.
WMAC brings public art to neighborhoods in the City of Wilmington and offers individuals of all ages an opportunity to get involved in a community-wide art program never before offered to them. Our projects are partnerships between professional muralists and community members, supported by schools, non-profit and for-profit agencies, civic groups, and government. These projects are community driven in every step of their creation with a goal to engage as many volunteers, especially youth, in the actual mural painting.
Past murals created by WMAC can be seen at the corner of 10th and Pine Streets; the corner of 8th and Jefferson Streets; inside the North Branch Wilmington Library at 35th and Market Street; and on the side of Fire Station #1 at 2nd and West Streets. The latest mural completed on the side of the Fire Station #1 was completed in the spring of 2007 with the help of over 300 community volunteers of all ages. The local community worked with professional muralist, Max Mason, to design, create, and the paint the 3500 square foot mural entitled, “Fourth of July in Wilmington.” The mural has a three-fold theme that includes “Fire Safety,” the “History of the Wilmington Fire Department,” and a “Tribute to the Heroes of 9/11.”
WMAC is excited about working with M. Fierro & Sons along with LINA and other local community groups, businesses, and individuals who will be coming together to help support and participate in this mural project. The location of the proposed mural is on the side wall of M. Fierro & Sons located at 1025 N. Union Street…the gateway to Little Italy. We would like to promote and create a theme based on Italian Heritage and Little Italy itself, but we need your help!
Here are several ways to become involved in this project:
